State legislators and statewide elected officials are required to file Personal Financial Disclosures in most states, which generally require the public disclosure of their business interests, sources of income, financial assets and liabilities. The details of what is required to be reported varies state-to-state, as does the name of the disclosure form, but these records are an essential resource when conducting public records research on public officials, to understand their business dealings, financial backgrounds and potential conflicts of interest. Many states also require the same disclosures by non-incumbent candidates for public office.
While most states require these personal financial disclosures, many provide limited online access the records. To make this easier to navigate, VR Research has prepared this 50 state guide for how to access, search and download personal financial disclosures--with general guidance on how may years back forms are available, whether older archives exist, and those states where it is necessary to submit a written or in-person request.
